3 hour massages

I was just having a browse on a free ad site to see the types of ads on there. One therapist offers 3 hour massages - dosen't look dodgy looking at her website. I know that an hour massage may not seem long to clients but 3 hours seems a bit much. Maybe it's just me - ah well.

I saw it on gumtree. I know there are dodgy ads there but a quick look at the therapists website and it looks ok.

Without a time restriction my normal massage treatment would be for about 70 - 90 minutes. I would be totally bored doing a 3 hour massage.

If she's not offering tantric then I believe there's such a thing as over-treating a client and also as a therapist surely you'd be tired, both physically and mentally after three hours non-stop massage. I doubt you'd be giving of your best?

I saw the same ad and definitely think it sounds like tantric. Don't want to give the link but put 3 hour massage in Google search engine and it bought it up on Gumtree. Had a look at her site and after reading what she offers, definitely.

To me 3 hours seems to be too long, surely any more than 2 hours and the effect will start to diminish........

Hawaian Lomi Lomi generally last 1 and a half to 2 hours. I have had some run into 2 and a half hours. It depends on the client. I don't find it at all tiring. In fact it can be quite infiguating for the therapist and certainly not boring.

the original sequence I was taught at my thai yoga massage course was two and a half hours...i have done only a few of those though...the main reason is that it is too expensive and most people dont have that much time, but i actually enjoyed them as i had a real feel for the person's energy...

If the treatment includes a lot of myofascial release and PNF/MET stretching, then a three-hour massage can be very useful. I have never given a three-hour massage (I would be afraid of losing my focus), but I have received several three-hour massages from a therapist who trained in myofascial release with Jing (who have been discussed on previous threads). Incidentally the therapist in question is probably the best therapist I have ever received massage from: I wish I could see her more often but price is a factor and her availability is limited !

Like ju79 says 2.5 hour Thai massage is not unusual. It's rare that I do such a long Thai massage, but when I do it's actually less effort than a typical 1 hour treatment as I can practice slower and more deeply. But then Thai is quite similar to myo release and other stuff mentioned by Alan D. At the end of the day its about money, and partly how fit the therapist is. The more I practice bodywork, the more I keep thinking how fit we have to be.

How funny to read this post about the 3 hour massage specialist! I do believe I know the woman in question, and can vouch that she is genuine, professional and well trained - and lovely too!

You many be surprised at how many people do request a 3 hour massage - sometimes even 4 hours!!!! I have found that it is often guys wanting a female masseuse, and personally have not had many requests for a 3 hour massage, just the odd couple. 2 hour massages however are quite normal.

Again though it depends on the style of massage being offered. Reflexology, an hour is enough. Hawaiian Lomi Lomi I usually do 1.5 to 2 hours, though no more than 2 hours, and if i'm not on form than 2 hours can be a strain. But oriental bodywork on the floor, well, thats another prospect, 2 hours is a walk in the park, 3 hours I've found myself in danger of running over, am yet to do more than 3 hours but feel i could well manage it! and by its nature it is very restful.

It is a joy to get the longer sessions booking in just cause its more cash secured in one hit. With all this hysteria about credit crunch many of us are led to believe people arent spending money on luxuries like massage but this is nonsense!! If it were no we would all be out of work. I know many people who are doing very well financially and who will come to spend over a hundred quids on a massage at a time! And thank the lord for them!!!

It is also amazing how many people, who come for a 3 hour massage, can remain as stiff, unrelaxed and controlling at the end of the session as at the beginning!! Some people just dont want to give it up!

Yes some clients are so used to holding themselves that they don't even realise it. I wonder if clients think they'll fall apart if they just let go. I think it is a control thing. I had a recent client who every 5 minutes kept tensing her back even though I knew I wasn't working particulary deep. I don't like telling clients to relax so I just asked her to take a deep breath in and out. Her back would then relax and then she'd tense it up again.

The maximum I do is 1 hour 30 minutes at the moment although I was thinking of offering a two hour but I think it would get quite tiring after that. I couldn't do it for 3 hours straight - my back would be killing me.

Ancient Hawaiian Healers apparently used to do massage treatments that lasted for days! 3 hours sounds like nothing in comparison to this.

The thing about these massages is that they are working not only on the physical level - it takes time for energy patterns around the client to change. It's also due to the intuitive, gentle style of Lomi Lomi- that it needs time.

For the Hawaiian Massage the rule is : longer, the better

Ive done 4 hour lasting massages myself- effects were amazing - they were told to be the best massages a client ever got. I guess it depends on personal preferences though - some people wouldn't be able to spend so much time on the table.
Bearing in mind that the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage is a gentle yet dynamic treatment- you should't get too bored

Note the s in Healers, multiple people. It was not one on one, taken in shifts, though the shifts might be more than one healer.

When I did my lomi lomi training there was one overnight treatment, go as many hours as you could, then swap with the person on the table. I think it was about 12hours, 6pm - 6am, aome people went until 3am and were told to stop so the person on the table could at least do 3hrs. Some people didn't make it through the whole evening so people were joinging otehr tables for 2 on one etc. It was interesting
