2/3 through and thinking about work!

I recently finished the 2nd of three semesters at my 20 hours a week M.T. program and have the summer off. That's about 600 hours out of 900 that I've completed.

Some time in the late fall my class becomes eligible to work for pay; I'm pretty excited, but also somewhat confused as to who would hire me prior to the end of school and certification. I'm thinking about checking around some of the local spas and networking with some established M.T.s that I know to see what's out there, and maybe print up some business cards as a preliminary step.

What's a good way to get your toes wet in the business?

One recommendation would be to try to work at a place where you'd be around other more experienced therapists. I know that's one thing that really helped me in the beginning. I learned much more from them than I ever did in any CEU class. It helps to have people to bounce things off of (is this contraindicated? how would you approach this problem?? etc)

At our clinic we have four therapist who all have between 10-20 yrs experience doing massage so we don't hesitate to hire fresh, right out of school therapists to work with them.

Try looking at masage clinics. They are probably your best bet.

I'm pretty excited, but also somewhat confused as to who would hire me prior to the end of school and certification.

One of the reasons someone would hire you while still in school is that they can offer their clientele discounted "student massages", similar to what's done in school clinics. When you call the clinics or spas, you can suggest this option. It's a great way for people to receive massage therapy, who aren't yet ready to pay full-price. You get experience while receiving some money for your time. And when you graduate, if you like where you've been working & they like you, you can transition to a fully paid, professional massage therapist position. Good luck!
