Dumb move. Canada caved to US pressure. It was the most advanced aircraft of it’s time but the US didn’t want the competition. Not a fighter but an interceptor (bomber hunter). Part of the reason Canada is “dependent” on the US military industrial complex is that the US wanted it that way to create American jobs. The other reason given was that the USSR was shifting from bombers to ICBM’s making it less relevant. But Canada could have established itself as a leading world combat jet manufacturer like Sweden has.

It was the fastest plane in the world. John Diefenbacher didn't want his government to spend the money.

It’s a bit of a long story. Canada provided some of the funding to develop the F35. When costs overruns where pushung the per unit cost into the stratosphere they cancelled and started looking at others including the Dassault and Swedish Griphon. Dassault pulled out of the bid based on Canadian interoperability and intelligence sharing (NORAD and 5 eyes). Canada eventually selected the F35 once again but as they were pushed down the order (other countries already selected the F35 too) the cost per F35 actually came down.

With the tariff threats, Canada should reconsider the F35. But from a cost standpoint, the Dassault (French) is $125M per unit, Eurofighter (Germany, UK, Italy and Spain) is $117M, F35 (US) is $109M, F15EX (US) is $97M and Saab Griphon (Sweden) $88M. The F35 is the only stealth fighter but it’s weapons load is low with internal weapons bay. It can carry externalweapons but sacrifice stealth. The F 15 EX is a beast but not stealthy and is another US. The Griphon lacks range. The Eurofughter is not stealthy and has other weaknesses as well as being more expensive.

Where they might look elsewhere is their new P8 Poseidon maritime patrol and sub hunting planes from Boeing. There are other none-Us alternatives, but the P-8 is the best plane.

Say no to American made planes from now on.
